What's in season in January

January is the quiet end of the home-grown year. Growers are still lifting leeks and parsnips and picking kale, Brussels sprouts, winter cabbages and rosemary. Apples and squash stored since autumn are often the only fruit and soft veg left.

Grower tip: Frost sweetens parsnips and sprouts, so mention it when you list them after a cold snap. A box of winter veg clearly over 5 kg can carry a set price; smaller bags should be free, a swap or pay what you think.
